An Overview Of The Windows 8 Versions

There are many versions of the Windows 8 OS available in the market. This article will give you detailed information on the various Windows 8 versions. Read ahead to know more on the features of the different versions of Windows 8.

Windows 8 (Consumer version)

This is the consumer version, which excludes a number of business-type features such as drive encryption, virtualization and group policy. This will give you access to the Windows Store, Remote Desktop Client, Live Tiles, VPN Client and other features.

Windows 8 Pro

This is the version for PC enthusiasts, business and technical professionals. This version includes all the features of Windows 8 with additional features like Bit Locker encryption, domain connectivity, PC virtualization and PC management. These features are obviously aimed at corporate companies.

Windows 8 Enterprise

This Windows 8 version includes all the features of Windows 8 Pro and is aimed at enterprise customers with Software Assurance.

Windows 8 RT (ARM or WOA)

Windows RT is the latest addition to the list of Windows versions. This is specifically designed for ARM processor powered computers and other devices that support ARM architecture.

This OS will be preloaded like a tablet running on Android or iOS. This means that you will not be able to install the Windows RT to any tablet or device. The interesting feature of Windows RT is that it provides device level encryption and touch based Office. This is provided as a part of the operating system. This avoids the need to buy a fresh copy of Office.

ARM is the processor architecture that is used in devices like mobile phones, tablets and some of the computers. WOA is the term used to refer to Windows on ARM or Windows 8 RT that can be used on ARM devices.

Launching Windows RT is a great step in the right direction by Microsoft. Windows RT will also provide touch enabled versions of Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint and OneNote) that will improve and develop the touch, Apps and the cloud, especially SkyDrive.
