Unlike many other modern radios the Yaesu FT-991A can be programmed simply using a USB cable. This radio already has a built in Silicon Chips CP210x chip built in.
Step 1: Download and Install USB Drivers
- Download USB Drivers:
- From the same support page, download the USB drivers for the FT-991A.
- Install USB Drivers:
- Extract the downloaded file if it is compressed.
- Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions to install the drivers.
Step 2: Connect Your FT-991A to Your Computer
- Connect via USB:
- Turn off your FT-991A.
- Use a USB cable to connect the radio to your computer.
- Turn on the FT-991A.
- Verify Connection:
- Open "Device Manager" on your Windows computer (you can find it by searching in the Start menu).
- Look for the COM port associated with the FT-991A under "Ports (COM & LPT)". The port should be listed as "Silicon Labs CP210x USB to UART Bridge" or similar.
Step 3: Program Your FT-991A
- Open the programming Software (let's use ADMS-991A as an example it isn't free. Website: https://www.rtsystemsinc.com/FT-991A_c_807.html):
- Launch the ADMS-991A software.
- Read from the Radio:
- In the software, select the appropriate COM port that matches your FT-991A.
- Use the option to "Read from Radio" to download the current settings from your FT-991A.
- Edit Settings:
- Make the desired changes to the radio settings using the software interface.
- Upload to the Radio:
- Once you have made the changes, use the option to "Write to Radio" to upload the new settings to your FT-991A.
Troubleshooting
- Driver Issues: If the USB drivers do not install correctly, ensure you downloaded the correct version for your Windows OS and try reinstalling.
- Connection Issues: Verify that the USB cable is properly connected and the COM port is recognized in Device Manager.
- Software Issues: Ensure you are using the latest version of the ADMS-991A software.
