VIA Lab's VL822 is a versatile USB 3.1 Gen 2 Hub Controller, offering a highly integrated, application-specific design. This controller is equipped with 1 upstream port and 4/2 downstream ports, all supporting 10Gbps USB 3.1 Gen 2 operation. The downstream ports are capable of accommodating a mix of SuperSpeed Plus (10Gbps), SuperSpeed (5Gbps), High Speed (480Mbps), Full Speed (12Mbps), and Low Speed (1.5Mbps) devices. Notably, the integrated USB 2.0 hub within the VL822 features Multiple Transaction Translators, optimizing bandwidth and performance especially when multiple Full Speed devices are simultaneously in use.
This controller is available in three variants: VL822-Q8 with the QFN88 10x10x0.85 mm package, VL822-Q7 with the smaller QFN76 9x9x0.85mm package, and VL822-Q5 with the compact QFN56 7x7x0.85mm package designed for two-port configurations. The QFN88 variant includes integrated 10Gbps Muxes for the Upstream Facing Port and two Downstream Facing Ports, offering advantages in Data-Only USB-C applications by potentially saving board space and enhancing signal integrity.
The VL822 also provides optional configurations for USB Billboard Device in USB-PD Alternate Mode applications and a USB HID endpoint for supporting Media Control Buttons like Play/Pause, Volume Up/Down, etc.
With its flexible firmware architecture, the VL822 facilitates custom functions and allows for in-field updates. Various parameters, including USB configuration, Tx equalization setting, and GPIO behavior, are adjustable through firmware. Additionally, the controller features an optionally configurable USB Charging Controller, enabling per-port configuration for charging devices such as smartphones and tablets.
VL822-based hub devices are compatible with Windows, Mac OS X, and various Linux kernels without requiring additional drivers. They are also suitable for non-x86 devices and platforms supporting USB hub functions, including smartphones, tablets, and set-top boxes. The VL822 is well-suited for various USB hub applications, including standalone USB hubs, Notebook/Ultrabook docking stations/port-replicators, desktop PC front panels, motherboard on-board hubs, and USB hub compound devices.
