Socket AM2+ is a CPU socket designed by AMD for its processors during the mid-2000s. It was an evolutionary upgrade from the previous Socket AM2 and provided backward compatibility with AM2 processors. The "+" in Socket AM2+ indicated support for HyperTransport 3.0 technology, which offered faster communication between the processor and other system components.
AM2+ motherboards were compatible with both AM2 and AM2+ processors, providing users with a smooth upgrade path. However, while AM2 processors worked in AM2+ motherboards, they couldn't take advantage of HyperTransport 3.0.
Some of the processors designed for Socket AM2+ include AMD Phenom and Athlon X2 processors. In recent years, AM2+ has been replaced by newer socket types, and newer processors are no longer manufactured for this socket.
